Joe and Diane Mayes, co-owners of Patchouli Joe’s an independent bookstore in Denton, Texas

Hey there, we’d love for you to begin by introducing yourself!

Joe Mayes, owner (with my wife, Diane) of Patchouli Joe’s Books & Indulgences. We opened May 29, 2021.

Diane is a long-time Denton resident and former school teacher, and Joe has been here a little over a year. He fell in love with Denton and Diane (not in that order) after spending more than 40 years as a nomad with no roots. One trip to Denton changed that. After 20 years in the Air Force and living all over the country (and the world), he found home. It helped that Diane was here.

What are some challenges you’ve had to overcome or has it been an easy path so far?

Too many challenges and obstacles to mention but the biggest was opening a bookstore in the Austin area six months before a global pandemic. The chance to relocate (both the store and personally) to Denton was a game changer. Becoming a part of the fabric of a tight-knit community like Denton is a challenge, but we’ve been welcomed (dare I say embraced?) with open arms. We are home.

We know we all have plenty of options, so what sets you apart from the crowd?

Love. Sounds silly but we operate our store on one simple principle: if love isn’t the answer, you don’t understand the question. Every single person who comes into our store is welcome, loved, and affirmed just as they are.

Our store is built to deliver in-person, physical experiences in an ever increasingly digital world.

What are some things you love about Denton? Anything you dislike or think could be improved?

We love the personality and diversity of Denton. It reminds Joe of Austin back in the 80s.

The downside of that is some people capitalizing on Denton’s coolness, without contributing to it. Obviously we’re all for businesses being successful, but a farmer who harvests without plowing the field and re-planting won’t have a farm for long.

OK, now for the fun part – any big plans for the future?

We want to be a Denton fixture…part of what makes Denton cool. We’d love to find a building on the Square to buy (know anyone willing to sell the Sherman building or the FArts building?) but only so we could make our presence even more permanent.

We also believe that if people don’t laugh at your dreams, you’re not dreaming big enough.

Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Interesting choice of words: READERS.

If we don’t have a particular book, we can probably order it for you and have it within 4-5 days. Or they can order from our website directly and either pick up the book in store of have it shipped to their home.

We want to be a place where everyone feels loved…so come check us out!
